Shady Grove Music Fair was the venue of choice in the Washington area for movie stars, bands, plays and musicals during the 1960s and 1970s. It was an arena theatre, where the audience surrounded the stage. At one point the stage actually rotated. Acts such as James Brown, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Steely Dan and the Jackson 5 played at Shady Grove. The old photo shows Shady Grove Road during the Blizzard of 1958, when over 14 inches of snow fell in the DC metro area. The picture was taken at the present-day intersection of Shady Grove and Blackwell Roads, facing north towards Key West Avenue. The house on right was the late 19th-century Allen Selby house, located on Windy Knoll Farm (Thomas Farm), which is today the Fallsgrove neighborhood in Rockville.
Lakeforest Mall opened in 1978. At the time Lakeforest was the largest indoor retail mall in the county and featured a movie theater, a stage for the performing arts and even an ice skating rink. It sure has changed a lot. Archived Comments

I bought this old postcard of the Washingtonian Motel on eBay after a local resident sent me a picture of the motel from the ground. It looked like such a fun place to stay. Notice how narrow I-270 was? This aerial view is looking north towards Frederick. Located at what is now Washingtonian Boulevard, this site is now a Marriott SpringHill Suites. Archived Comments
