PostOffice

Gaithersburg's original post office, established around 1850, was called the Forest Oak Post Office. It was located inside Gaither's Store, which stood near the famous Forest Oak tree along the Great Road (modern day Route 355). The Post Office moved around a few times and in 1960, eventually ended up at 21 South Summit Avenue.

Regina Moses Carelli 5/18/10 The Post Offices were close to the train station because the mail was delivered by train. The heavy canvas bag of mail was thrown from the mail car and the outgoing mail was hung on a metal rod by the tracks and was snagged as the train roared past.
Deaner Lawless Jr. 2/23/11 As I recall in the late 50's, before the post office stood a wooden water tower.
Fred Powell Jr 4/7/11 As a kid my parents stuck me up at the civic center day program at the property on the right of the PO, crafts & tether ball mostly. LOL I still today see Richard & Lou Perry often, and for a while after he sold Perry's on Diamond next to Wolfson's, he worked at the PO there. I grew up running with all the Perry boys except Rick.
Nicholas Keay 3/9/13 I had Safety Patrol duty every morning in front of the post office as a 6th grader. There was a beautiful woman who drove a Corvette who went there 2 or 3 times a week, good memories
Tony Bart 11/5/13 Summer 1980, one night I went into the post office to buy a stamp and mail a letter. I left my '69 camaro running with the headlights on and windows down. I left it there and walked home, the next day when I was going out I remembered where I left my car. I walked back up to the P/O and there it sat out of gas, dead battery, and the keys in the ignition with windows down unmolested.
Tom Weaver 1/21/14 I remember Mr Meadows was Postmaster in the 80's - his parents lived on Maryland Ave. I heard many wonderful stories from the Meadows - he was a WWI vet and Mrs Meadows made great fried chicken. I bough my first car from them.
paul vogel 7/5/14 Mr E. Dale Meadows was the guy who hired me in July 1978! a good guy
