16Brookes

Susanna Gaither was the mother of Thomas Brookes, who inherited much of the land now occupied by the Brookes and Russell subdivision. Susanna lived at 16 Brookes Avenue, next to Epworth Church. The black-and-white photograph was taken in 1918 and the house is still standing today.

Mitch Gardner 5/9/10 The rev. Dalzell And family lived in this house during the fifty, sixtys and then the city owned it as a GUIDE youth center. At that time while I was wiring for an alarm system I found, in the attic, a box of newspapers. The most notable was a unaged copy of the December 8th 1941 issue of the WASHINGTON TIMES_HERALD which was the first printed news of the Japan attack on Pearl Harbor. I still have it under glass in my study!
L Young 5/17/10 Did the Epworth Church used to be the Church of the Nazarene? and the house was the parsonage of the church...back in the 60's & 70's?
M Bloom 10/17/13 I believe this church was and is the Ascension Episcopal Chapel across from St Martins Catholic Church. I went to this church as a child and remember the Dazell family well.
Bill Hendry 2/8/16 My grandmother was Nelley Russell Brookes Hendry, daughter of Thomas. I still have the original sales receipts from a number of those on Brookes ave.
