Gaithersburg

Francis Cassatt Clopper (courtesy of Helen Caufield Madine Gregory)

Clopper was instrumental in the development of Montgomery County, especially in Gaithersburg. Without his efforts the railroad would have never come to town and Gaithersburg would most likely not be the bustling city it is today. This portrait, painted by Thomas Sully in 1810, hung in Clopper's Woodlands Estate for 150 years.
